taking a step back to look at what i painted in long island while sitting in california. i love how this collection is starting to take shape.
i’m traveling from new york to california today. i spent a lot of time thinking about what art supplies to bring along with me. i packed the essentials: my iPad, my journal/sketchbook, watercolor palette, watercolor paper, my travel brushes, and some pencils + pens. i’m looking forward to creating in new spaces. 〰️ watercolor on paper
yesterday i woke up in a funk. the weather was miserable and it made me feel uninspired. i sat down and decided to paint anyways. as i put the brush to paper i felt my body soften. i looked outside and it was snaining (a term i use when it’s raining + snowing). the pitter patter on the roof became soothing background music while i completed this painting. over the past six months of intensive therapy for anxiety, PTSD, and depression my therapists encouraged me to use my artwork as part of my healing process. yesterday i saw my painting practice transform my mental state. this is why i’m making space for my creative process with no pressure or expectations and why i’m sharing it here. 〰️ picture one: watercolor on paper | picture two: iPad version | picture three: drone image by @saltywings #swellseasseries
sometimes i need to step back and allow some space - in my creative practice & life - to see things from a new perspective. my drone inspired series is reinforcing this idea. 〰️ picture one: watercolor on paper | picture two: iPad version | picture three: drone image by @dirka #swellseasseries
this kinda reminds me of a porthole and i’m totally okay with that. get used to seeing lots of 🔵 for my next #swellseasseries 〰️ picture one: watercolor on paper | picture two: my iPad version
as i’m working on removing “should” from my vocabulary i’ve seen so much freedom and movement in my life. my creative process feels less forced/constrained and more fluid. it’s wild how my mindset shifts are now reflecting in my artwork. if you’re feeling stuck i’d challenge you to take a close look at how frequently you do things because you feel like “you should” 〰️ picture one: watercolor on paper | picture two: detail shot | picture three: my iPad inspiration image #swellseasseries
started the day off with a color study. i’m creating palettes for my #swellseasseries and this one is giving me all the feels.
the first stages of the #swellseasseries begin on my iPad. i love seeing how the colors interact, the layouts begin to take their form, and the ideas in my head finally are released. working in this way allows space for my ideas to breathe before the physical pieces are painted.
