bedsidesign files: kory woodard | a new journey

I'm so excited to announce a new monthly series here on bedsidesign! For a while I've been trying to figure out how to mesh two things that I'm super passionate about: promoting designers and interiors. I don't know about you, but I always wonder what someone's bedside table looks like. It's such a personal space - a place that usually gathers the most important things. bedsidesign-files

I contacted some AMAZING designers/bloggers for this series and wish I could tell you who they all are right now - but that wouldn't be fun, I love secrets! In order to provide the space and time for these posts you can tune back every 1st Saturday of the month (basically whenever Blog Brunch happens!).

Who is up first for this series? Well it's my lovely friend Kory Woodard from A New Journey. Her name may sound familiar to you because I write a guest column on her blog called, Pretty Paper. Let's get to know more about Kory.

What type of design work you do?

Currently I mainly do blog designs, but I am also available for other print + web design work.

When did you “know” you wanted to be a designer?

I think I knew I wanted to be a designer after I designed my dad's band's first cd. Looking back it's so ugly (don't tell him that!), but going through the process of creating it really brought to life a new thing I never thought of before. I think it was around then that I was initially interested.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

My favorite part would probably be creating. I really enjoy playing with the different fonts and colors. To some people actually coming up with the design can be the most frustrating part, but I really enjoy it.

Where do you find your inspiration?

It honestly depends. Lately I've been finding a lot of inspiration on Pinterest! I also look at websites like Dribbble. If I'm feeling particularly stumped I look at what other designers are doing to get a sense of the current design trend.

Tell us about the city/town that you live in:

I currently live in Clarksville, Tennessee. It's a college city and relatively big. There are 3 super Walmarts, the Cumberland River, and lots of sink holes. It's also about an hour north west of Nashville.

What is your favorite pantone color?

Pantone 15-5519, which is Turquoise.

Describe your design/interior/fashion style in 5 words:

Colorful, minimal, functional, and comfortable! (Comfortable for fashion because I'm almost always in a t-shirt and jeans!)

Do you freelance? If so, do you have any tips for people starting out?

I do freelance! My tips would be to get yourself out there and then be patient. Last summer I had one freelance job, and that's when I was just getting my feet wet. It's frustrating in the beginning, but with patience and hard work you'll climb the latter eventually.

Describe your “perfect” day: My perfect day would consist of a few things: Italian food, relaxing, and getting thumbs up's from clients. Those are probably my three favorite things right now.

Did you go to school for design - what was your major/school? How has this impacted you as a designer?

I'm currently in school for design! Next spring I'll be graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication. I think for the most part it's helped me realize and develop my own design style. Two years ago I didn't think I had a style and now I know it's minimalist and colorful. It's also helped me learn other art forms like illustration that I can apply to my designs.

Who is your all-time favorite musician?

All time favorite would have to be Paramore! They're definitely my go to band.
